Top 7 Web Design Mistakes To Avoid

This is our list of the 7 most important web mistakes to avoid… I know there are plenty more rules than this, but we feel like these 7 rules cover almost every application of web design we can think of at this time. Comment if you disagree.

01. Do not use FrontPage
This is the number one rule for a reason… FrontPage sucks. Don’t use it. It’ll make you look like an amateur, and will spit out nasty bug-ridden code that not even Microsoft’s own Internet Explorer can display properly.

02. Make sure your website is cross-browser compatible
Not all browsers are created equal, and not all of them interpret CSS and other languages on the same way. Like it or not, you will need to make your website compatible with the most used browsers on the market, else you will lose.

03. Use a simple navigation structure
In my experience less is more, and consistency is key. Make sure that your website has a clear navigation structure. The last thing you want is to confuse the user regarding where they should go to find the information they’re looking for.

04. Do not use pop ups
This point refers to pop ups of any kind. Even user requested pop ups are a bad idea given the increasing amount of pop blockers out there.

05. Do not resize the user’s browser windows
I’ll admit I’ve done this before, but it’s another serious no no. Anytime you take away the user’s control of the situation you just create frustration and annoyance. Plus you might screw up what they had going on in their other hundred tabs or so, but maybe that’s just me.

06. No spelling or grammatical mistakes
This is not a web design mistake, but it is one of the most important factors affecting the overall quality of a website. Make sure that your links and texts do not contain spelling or grammatical mistakes.

07. Do not use hidden text.
This rule doesn’t affect the end user, but it’s just plain dumb at this point. Don’t do it. It’s useless and you’ll most likely get severely penalized by any search engine that comes across your site. Seriously, even if your site isn’t indexed and you don’t want it to be, why would you ever need hidden text?

WTF…MTV Redesign?

Right when I was getting used to their old flash site, they up a redesign back to HTML… I don’t like it.

I don’t not like it because I prefer flash over HTML, It’s because they took a good thing and made it worse… The main focus of the redesign is something they’re calling “hats” - basically everytime you reload you get a totally different background. In my opinion they wasted a ton of money paying all these artists to create their own versions of the MTV logo, and not enough time working on the usability of the actual content…

Haha! It seems I’m not the only one hating on the site… check out what other people are saying about the site here: MTV LABS
